During the harvest season, which starts around mid-October, everyday hundreds of people get up before dawn to go to the fields and pick the beautiful delicate lilac colour flowers that have bloomed overnight. They must be picked before being exposed to too much sunshine. The flowers are then carried in wicker baskets to a processing areas where the stigmas are patiently removed by hand.
In the next step, saffron stigmas are gently toasted in order to dry them before they are tested, sorted and packed, insuring the full, unique and exquisite flavour, aroma and colour of this “vegetable gold” reaches the consumer.
We import our saffron directly from trusted farms in the Middle East and then pack them here in the UK. Unlike most shops, we import small batches of saffron to use only for our products. This allows us to be extremely selective on quality and source of this precious spice, meaning our saffron is always from the latest and best crops.
